Sixty-nine of HOPE’s students participated in “Circles of the World” — an arts performance that included dance, song and visual art based on different cultures around the globe — Sunday at the Denver Art Museum.

It’s Time Teachers Move Beyond the Dusty Old Grade Book
March 12, 2013

First, we must look at the tools teachers use and optimize them for use in the modern classroom. A great example is a teacher’s most tried and true tool: the grade book.
Students are more than a collection of their quiz and test scores, but most grade books don’t empower educators to go beyond that, let alone make information visible across classrooms. It’s a problem I set out to address by creating Kickboard. The platform enables educators and school leaders to capture, analyze and share richer profiles of student performance. This includes multiple assessments, standards mastery, 21st-century skills, reading growth and, most uniquely, student behavior, character strengths, and personal interests.

Earning College Credit Outside the Classroom

And with Kickboard, teachers are keeping track of other factors that were historically (and sometimes mysteriously) rolled into the overall grade on a report card – class participation, timeliness and completion of work.
Keeping track of students’ character development and learning habits – and taking into account the process and thinking behind completing a task, not just whether they got it “right” – is essential to personalizing learning.

New college program targets students with grit, not high test scores
October 23, 2012
![]()
A new college program that will primarily select students by personal characteristics -– grit, resiliency and motivation –- rather than test scores began accepting applications this week for campuses in California and Colorado.
Portmont College at Mount St. Mary’s aims to give students who have “the will but not the way” high-quality, personalized programs featuring online learning, success coaches and other services — all for the bargain price of $5,240 per year.
“If you think about the American dream as offering a fair shot to all, it’s not as fair as it used to be,” Srikant Vasan, Portmont’s founder and president, said Tuesday. “This is our opportunity to make the dream true again.”

Remember – to those who have done a few hundred Data Sufficiency problems and who are poised to score over 700, remembering “AD/BCE” or “1-2-T-E-N” isn’t hard. The concept of Data Sufficiency at the 75th-99th percentile level isn’t just about “can you cross-reference your analysis of the statements (i.e. 1 sufficient – 2 not sufficient – A!) with the answer choices to select the right level. It’s much more sophisticated – the Data Sufficiency setup lends itself to trap answers and to rewards for those who truly think critically. So play chess – don’t let yourself get overly confident with a basic understanding of Data Sufficiency. At least 10% of your competitors realize that that’s helpful, but it’s certainly not sufficient.

“Harvard now requires two essays rather than four, and it added a “reflection” essay, which is due 24 hours after the interview (for those selected). Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business also trimmed its required essay count from four to three, and it dropped its combined word limit for the essays from 1,800 to 1,600. Columbia Business School, meanwhile, now asks applicants to write an essay response to its promotional video, Community at Columbia, in addition to its standard essays.
That’s already enough to convince Scott Shrum, director of admissions research at the admissions consultancy Veritas Prep (which writes a medical school admissions blog for U.S. News), that it’s going to be a “big change year.”
Top schools tinker with their applications every year, but Harvard’s changes are the biggest that Shrum has seen in the last decade. ‘The more a school changes its application from year to year—that tells you that whatever they were getting previously, they weren’t happy with,’ he says.”
